Kearney Junior High

Academics Home

Working together to become lifelong learners.

Kearney Junior High has been an engine of academic excellence for more than four decades, earning National Blue Ribbon status back in 1982‑83 and continually updating its programs to match today’s world.

Challenging Core Curriculum
Every Bulldog tackles a rich sequence of English language arts, math, science and social studies that balances rigor with real‑life relevance. Hands‑on labs, Socratic seminars and project‑based assessments ask students to think critically, communicate clearly and create with purpose.

STEM & Innovation
From Gateway to Technology modules to competitive Robotics and Science Olympiad, KJH’s makerspaces buzz with brainstorming and build days. Our eighth‑grade scientists captured multiple medals at the 2025 Greater Kansas City Science & Engineering Fair—proof that curiosity here turns into achievement.

Fine Arts, World Language & Electives
Students explore their passions through award‑winning band, choir and art, plus exploratory rotations in business, coding, family & consumer sciences, Spanish and more. Ninth‑graders can even begin earning high‑school credit in select courses, giving them a head start on graduation requirements.

Tailored Support & Extension
Learning doesn’t stop at the bell. Bulldog Zone keeps the library open after school Tuesday–Thursday with teacher‑led tutoring, study groups and a quiet place to focus, while morning help sessions run daily for early birds. Advisory periods, individualized learning plans and special services ensure every learner, whether accelerated, on‑level or in need of extra scaffolding, gets what they need to grow.

Measuring Growth & Readiness
We track progress through state MAP assessments, common unit tests and growth‑mindset goal‑setting conferences. Results consistently outpace peer districts, and the majority of our ninth‑graders enroll in Honors or Advanced courses when they transition to Kearney High.

Ready for What’s Next
By blending high expectations with robust support, KJH sends students across the bridge to high school confident, compassionate and ready to lead, already living the Bulldog motto of respect, responsibility and resilience.
